General Skip Hire FAQs
Do I need a permit to hire a skip?
You only need a permit if the skip will be placed on a public road or pavement. No permit is needed if it’s kept on private land (like a driveway). Most providers can arrange permits for you.
How long can I keep the skip for?
Most companies offer a standard hire period of 7–14 days. Extensions are usually available at an additional cost.
What size skip do I need?
It depends on the type and volume of waste. Mini skips are suitable for small household clear-outs, while builders’ skips are ideal for larger renovation or construction projects. Check our skip size guide for help.
What can I put in a skip?
General waste, garden waste, and building materials are usually fine. However, items like asbestos, fridges, tyres, paint, and hazardous chemicals are typically not allowed. Always check with your provider.
Is skip hire pricing fixed or variable?
Prices vary based on location, skip size, hire duration, and waste type. Most providers offer transparent pricing during the booking process.
Is payment required upfront?
Yes, in most cases you’ll pay at the time of booking. Online booking usually requires a debit or credit card.
Can I get same-day or next-day delivery?
Some skip hire providers offer same-day or next-day delivery, depending on availability. Booking early gives you the best chance.
Will the skip damage my driveway or property?
Skips are heavy, so there’s a small risk of surface damage. You can request wooden boards to be placed underneath to reduce this risk.
Can I order multiple skips or arrange collection and delivery at different times?
Yes. Many companies offer flexible scheduling for multiple skips or staged deliveries/collections. Just check with the provider during booking.
What happens if the skip is overfilled?
Overfilled skips may not be collected due to safety regulations, and you could be charged extra. Always fill within the skip's marked height.
